Jimmy Smith, live in 1985

Last night over the Go table, my opponent and I listened to Jimmy Smith's famous disc, The Sermon. Today when I got in, I checked youtube and found this video from 1985. When you think of the Hammond B3, you have to think of Jimmy Smith, a player who brought the B3 into prominence as a jazz instrument.

The B3 is a fantastic instrument, with drawbars and tone wheels and a good buddy....the best friend of a B3 is the Leslie tone cabinet, a unit with a rotating speaker to bring out the vibrato of the organ. The B3 is heavy and loud and a beautiful monster.

So sit back and listen...go back in time with me just a little, and dig Jimmy Smith.

By the way, the article about the history of the B3 claims that the expression "pulling out all the stops", refers to the drawbars of the Hammond B3.

The first time I remember hearing the the B-3 live was Booker T. and the MG's. Back then, radio and stereos couldn't come close to doing justice to the B-3 sound. I was blown away by the sound.
