Good-night Bandit
I heard this fellow interviewed on the radio, who goes into Toronto neighbourhoods at night with garbage bags and spends the night picking up trash. He also makes a point going into areas where junkies hang out and cleans up there too, making sure there are no needles around that kids might get into. He typically spends from 9:00 pm until 9:00 next morning cleaning and fills about 10 bags of trash each night. He calls himself the Goodnight Bandit and leaves a "calling card" on street posts.
It makes me think that if all of us did just a tiny bit towards making our communities better, how much better they could really be.
The other day I was driving behind a woman who through a tissue out her car window. It flew back then swooped over my car and off to the side of the road. Then she opened a pack of cigarettes and through the plastic wrap out the window. I honked my horn but she seemed to be oblivious to having done anything wrong. How difficult would it have been for her to keep her trash in her car until she could deposit it in a trash can? I would have liked to see that driver spend a night cleaning up a neighbourhood!

Good post. I use to live on a corner lot and watched the kids passing through the alley tossing their garbage without a thought as if it was a completely normal thing to do.
I'd always wonder "who do they think is going to clean this up?"
It doesn't take much effort to take care of your own refuse.
Word.
Word.

Hi mr. anchovy,
I'm back online and had to come for a visit.
I didn't think people did that any more, the littering thing.
Come for a blog visit if you get the time,
k
I get really angry when I see people using the roads for their private garbage cans too. I hope they receive a dump on their lawns.
The night bandit is now added to my list of "heroes."
Well Candy, I guess non-participation is one way to go....very much like the Wobbly approach.
My Dad tells a great story of a cop who threw garbage out his window and my dad blew his scary truck horn to get his attention then gave the officer the shame shame finger cross n' point and the jerk didn't know how to respond! The "bandit of goodness" reminds me of the"fox" who used to activate animal traps to cut down the chances of the animal being trapped. Litter bothers me a lot..so in order to cope I view it as temporary public sculpture.?
I live in the northernmost extension of the biggest desert in North America.
Every year I watch some summer driver toss a butt out of his car window.
If I still smoked, I'd follow such people so that I could empty my smoldering ashtray into their cars.
What's needed is a "report these people" billboard like the ones used for poachers.
I mean, we've had enormous forest fires in the area every summer for a decade, but these morons are still acting like it couldn't possibly be about them.
Australia has the right idea. The fine for dropping a cigarette butt (whether it's lit or not) is about $10,000.
If you're a foreigner, you can subsequently be deported with a "Never-again" note on your file.
