Black convicted on 4 counts
This is the big news headline here in Toronto as former Canadian, former press baron, soon to be former arrogant rich guy, Conrad Black....is convicted for mail fraud and obstructing justice. He will appeal, but from what I've read, his chances won't be great. He may also have to give up much if not all of his wealth to settle the civil suits which will inevitably follow. You can bet that Hollinger shareholders what their $60M back.
CTV reported tonight that Black wants his Canadian citizenship back, but may not be able to get it. He renounced it a while back so he could become a British Lord. Now that he is a convicted felon, he will have trouble getting into Canada at all.
So, will he do his time, and write about it? Will he disappear with wife Barbara? Or will he, as was suggested by a commenter the other day, simply off himself to avoid facing the humiliation. Meanwhile, Black has a new book out about Richard Nixon, and I understand he is no slouch as an amateur historian.

As I just commented on my blog, I really don't understand why we should really give a shit. I've been so frustrated with the amount of coverage this whole thing has been getting. I heard he might be a flight risk so they may take all his documents away from him. As for getting his CDN citizenship back: get a brain, Conrad! Geez...
Yeah, seems he wants his Canadian citizenship back because if he gets it, he can serve his time in Canada where the parole laws are much more lenient.
Apparently, we have no such agreement with the UK.
According to the news, he could get anywhere from 5 to 23 years here. Whcih means the very lesat he could serve would be 2 1/2 yrs.
For his sake, I hope he is a big Republican donor. Then maybe he can get his sentance commuted like Mark Rich did!
It is amazing - enough is never enough for people consumed with greed. Whatever this guy serves is probably not going to be enough, because of what he has done to investors - witness Enron - I would love to see a newspaper article where now all he has is being liquidated and given back to the people he has defrauded. His family's pic was in the paper today - he has nice arm candy.
What a story...I was sure his lawyers might have been able to get him out of this but ha...!
Oh god, I hope he can't get his Cdn ciizenship back...
I think he'll skip the appeal and do the time. If he announces that before the sentencing hearing it's his best chance of a 5-8 year sentence and also the best chance at looking like a victim of unfair justice.
My husband says he submits to no authority so he'll skip out to a place with no extradition.
As to why all the coverage - news has always been this way. The nastiness in humans that they follow the falls. In art we glorify them and then call them tragic heros with fatal flw but in reality evil tends to be very banal.
Muppie
I wonder if Lady Barbara (does she get to call herself that?) will stick around. After all, it was she who said her extravagance knows know bounds, and she might need to get more dough elsewhere....
