Stubborn stump

The big job of the day today was removing the stump of the old plum tree in front of my studio. I hate cutting down trees, but I took the plum down in 06 for all sorts of reasons - mostly it was badly diseased and it was planted in a very poor spot. Today, I removed the stump. I received all sorts of advice from the peanut gallery on this.
- hire a guy to grind the stump and leave the rest
- burn it out
- split the stump with an ax and remove the pieces

I dug and sawed and picked and chopped and dug and whacked and whacked harder and kicked and pulled and.... finally, I removed it. I filled in the hole and tomorrow after work, I'll start working on the next part of the patio, in front of the secret lab.

I also found some time to plant some tomatoes in containers. I put them in containers this year because the yard is in such upheaval. Meanwhile, I'm picking our first lettuce of the year tomorrow, and scallians will be ready in a week or two.

Looks like you're hoisting a trophy up in victory, there! Which, it pretty much is, right? Go you!

We've had to burn out a few stumps, but they were WAY bigger than that one.

Yum, new lettuce, its the best! The stump looks like a back breaker. I have one down here you could remove! We paid to have it taken out, the hurricane took it to about 5 feet up, and the guy came by while I was in Wyoming, collected the money and cut it off about 2 inches above ground. Looks better, but.......

So, did the Cat close the deal?

I had the same thought as w.c., it looks like a trophy.
We're also planting tomatoes in containers this year for the first time, mainly because we have a shade garden and because the weather is cool and damp here we thought they'd have a better chance in a warm container. I look forward to hearing about the success of the tomatoes. I've also been inspired by a book called Incredible Vegetables in Containers. The author shows how you can plant anything in a container and grow it successfully.

I'm so tired just looking at all these pics of the work you've done. Well, what else is vacation time for but work right?

You'll have to go back to work to get some rest.
