Hatching a Plan
Every year around our anniversary, Tuffy P and I make a point of going somewhere for a week or so. We've done several road-trips, and in 2006 we visited Portugal. We're hatching a plan now for 2007.
We're planning to fly to San Antonio Texas in time for the International Accordion Festival in mid-October. If the universe unfolds as it should, we'll meet up with Candy and Stagg in San Antonio and travel with them for the week....after a couple days in San Antonio, we'll rent a car and head for Houston...(I'd like to visit Austin in there too...we'll see)....then east into Louisiana, through Cajun country and finally to New Orleans.
If any of you have done some traveling around down in that neck of the woods, and have some suggestions....places to go, stuff to do, food to eat, music to hear....we'd love to hear them.

Hi. I have seen you at tshsmoms before. I thought I would finally drop in and say hello. I am not familiar with the area you are goign to travel but have lots of fun and take lots of pix. My step father is from Texas. He hasnt been down that way in a long time so I cant say he would have any suggesetions for you if I asked him really. He has been in MN for the last 28 years. Well again thought I would stop and say hello and see what you have on your blog finally. Tweets.
I'd go just for the seafood you pictured here.
Hmm - mid October hmmm? I will be thinking of some places - definitely if you guys hit New Orleans, go to the Court of Two Sisters for one of their long, languid, courtyard brunches complete with Mimosas and serenading group of the moment - ( perhaps you would want to take your accordian and join them!) wonderful Creole and Cajun Buffet-
Certainly, do hit St. Charles Street (N.O.) and some of the fun tours - although I don't know for sure what is left there as far as tours. We took one once, saw Ann Rice's gorgeous home and church she bought, complete with ceiling artwork restored and resold, and heard of the history of the Irish in N.O.
Then there are the famous horse and carriage rides....
Not many magicians, artists, musicians left on the streets there I've heard. Before the storms, they seemed to have dwindled down.
I did read St Charles Street is back up and running - its sort of elegant in places, and always "old worldly."
If you only fly fish, don't do this - but if you are up for an adventure - somewhere along the coast plan on joining a group to go out in the Gulf deep sea fishing.
There are (were?) lots of galleries in the French Quarter and antique shops, but I hear some are going out of business. I always loved the "Blue Dog" paintings - I think the artist has his own gallery there.
Also my daughter and I were always wanting to find some fais de dois places (hope that's the right term) in Louisiana - somewhere off the beaten path - unfortunately my daughter & I never found one - we were always going to find one and take harmonicas and join in..........
You'll be driving right by our house, maybe you folks could stop here? Or we could meet you somewhere. We'll take you & Tuffy P. to a dock restaurant somewhere and buy you a languid lunch while we sigh and watch the Gulf soar in and out (or a great barbecue place.) (October? Hopefully not SURGE in and out!) I will look and see what is happening in October - maybe the Seafood Festival complete with seafood and art and music?
Greater Gulf Coast Arts Festival is in November - artists from all over the world come here - all mediums accepted.
thanks for all the suggestions, Gardenia!!
If you make it to Austin, you gotta go to Stubb's BBQ, have dinner, and take in a show. While the bbq is really good, my personal recommendation would be the awesome Red Beans and Rice.
I like Red Beans and Rice fine, but I don't know if I could go into a BBQ joint and not eat BBQ. I think in some jurisdictions that is a crime.
