from Joni.....to Wilf

Well, Joni
got all the press, but she wasn't the only one inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame the other night.

Let's not forget about the late Wilf Carter, known to our American friends as "Montana Slim". He was a great songster, singer, and a pretty good yodeller too. Among my favourites are Blue Canadian Rockies, The Ballad of Pete Knight, and Hang the keys on the Bunkhouse Door.....

(C) A bunch of jolly cowboys, when the (F) roundup days were (C) done
De-(F)-cided they would (C) head for town and (D) have a little (G) fun
As (C) they rode gaily down the trail I could (F) hear the old cook (C) say
I’ll (F) hang the key on the (C) bunkhouse door and (G) boys don’t you be (C) late

Chorus
(F) Hang the key on the bunkhouse door ‘cause we’ll be late to-(C)-night
Don’t leave the light a-burnin’ dear, we may not look (G) right
The (C) trail is long, the (F) goin’s tough and (C) someone may get (G) tight
So (F) hang the key on the (C) bunkhouse door ‘cause (G) we’ll be late to-(C)-night

Inst: Follow pattern of first verse

(F) Hang the key on the bunkhouse door ‘cause we’ll be late to-(C)-night
Don’t leave the light a-burnin’ dear, we may not look (G) right
The (C) trail is long, the (F) goin’s tough, (C) someone may get (G) tight
So (F) hang the key on the (C) bunkhouse door ‘cause (G) we’ll be late to-(C)-night

Inst: Follow pattern of first verse and Chorus

(C) Those city gals are lots of fun but (F) they can’t see our (C) ways
(F) Swing them through the (C) old square dance they (D) call us ornery (G) strays
All (C) dressed in chaps and jeans and spurs we (F) sang with all our (C) might
(F) Hang the key on the (C) bunkhouse door ‘cause (G) we’ll be late to-(C)-night

(F) Hang the key on the bunkhouse door ‘cause we’ll be late to-(C)-night
Don’t leave a light a-burnin’ dear, we may not look (G) right
The (C) trail is long, the (F) goin’s tough and (C) someone may get (G) tight
So (F) hang the key on the (C) bunkhouse door ‘cause (G) we’ll be late to-(C)-night

Yes sir, the trail is long, the goin's tough and someone may get tight. I love that line. So here's a small tribute to Wilf Carter.
