Dirt Farmer

Levon Helm. Where's he been and what has he been up to? It's been over 30 years since Robbie Robertson packed in The Band with The Last Waltz. Mr. Helm has successfully fought throat cancer, and his voice is back in fine form. With the help of his daughter Amy, guitarist Larry Campbell (who played on the road with Bob Dylan for a few years) and Teresa Williams, Mr. Helm created a remarkable bit of work in 2007 called Dirt Farmer. The CD features mostly traditional music from the American south, along with covers written by the likes of the Carter Family and Steve Earle.

Readers of this blog know I have a soft spot for folk music and in particular the musical traditions of the American south, so it may not come entirely as a surprise that I'm enthusiastic about this recording. It is one of the best recordings I heard in 2007 without doubt.

You are broadening my musical horizons. I've tracked down a few of your recommendations on the net and even found a couple at the local HMV store.

Dunno if I'll play owt like this on my Live Drunk Punk show (Sat 2nd Feb 10pm UK time) but I just might. It'll surprise a few of my regulars that's for sure!!

Entertainment Weekly did a very good article on Levon a few weeks ago. It along with your post might lead me to sample some of the tunes on his new CD.

I have been eager to hear this one. The reviews have been great. Now, with your endorsement, I will delay no longer.
