Checking in from Houston
We drove into Houston yesterday. It seems like a huge city driving in along massive expressways, but the area we are staying, near the museum district is very friendly and doesn't seem so big. We spent the afternoon at the Menil Collection. It is world famous for every good reason. The collection at the main gallery is superb, plus there is the Rothko chapel, as well as an entire building dedicated to an installation by Dan Flavin and another entire building housing a major group of paintings Cy Twombly. Fantastic!
We asked a few people for dinner recommendation, and in particular, a good Texas bbq joint, and the unanimous choice was a place called Goode Company BBq (just turn at the giant armadillo). It was seriously good BBq!! I had some of the best brisket I've had anywhere. As a bonus, we met up with a woman Candy knows through a literary forum.
We stayed at a lovely B&B last night, called the Lovett Inn, which I would recommend for anybody visiting Houston. It's a fabulous and friendly place. Later this morning, we're heading east toward Acadiana - Cajun country in Louisiana.
