Bear Update

Here is a good article from one of the local papers about the recent bear shooting I blogged about.

Another person in the area has started a "Feed the Bears" program, but this isn't a popular idea with the local conservation officers.

In one article, the conservation officer said that the best way to bearproof a town is to get rid of all fruit trees.

I hardly think this is a reasonable measure.

"Feed the Bears"?

Just when you think the shooter was unique in the history of dumbassery ...

Well, let me give some details.

She's taking the food out to specific spots in the woods, far away from town. She isn't giving them crap; she's taking fruit from fruit trees bears would eat anyways, and edible kitchen scraps - no wrappers or garbage at all. She's looking for donations...

I actually don't think this is a bad idea. If we had specific feeding spots for starving bears (which is why they're coming into down, remember) that are far away from populated areas, the bears will learn to go there instead of into town. I think this is worth a try because bears in populated areas just isn't working right now.

She can be charged and fined, but I hope the conservation dudes at least give this a chance just to see how it goes.

Coyote - I think that is the best idea as well - if you can get someone who can run very fast after they leave the food - just kidding. The bear found wandering in the cemetery was no where near fruit trees. So what was he going to eat? No salmon there either. My theory on that one is that there was so much mining and wilderness encroachment going on that he got confused and - well, there he was. For a hunting state, he got much kinder treatment than your bear - they caged him and hauled him way up into the mountains and released him.

Sorry, didn't know the details. Sounds like quite a bit of work, but it's an alternative anyway ...
