Il lunario della pastasciutta (The Almanac of Dry Pasta) by Gustavo Traglia (1956) catalogues 298 different types of pasta. It starts with acini di pepe, aeroplani, abissine, africanine, agnolini, agnolotti, anchellini, anelletti, anelli, anelli rigati, anellini (the difference between anellini and anelleti is quite clear: ‘the former are a common type of pasta of medium size, with a large hole that allows it to absorb sauce,’ while the latter are ‘very small pasta, originally from Naples, that are smaller than anelli rigati (ribbed rings) and are always cooked in broth’), anelloni, animine, anolini, armellete, armelline, arselle and on and on concluding with tagliatelle, tagliatella nervata, tempestine, tempesta, torciglioni, torta di vermicelli, tortellini, tortiglioni grandi, trifogli, tripolini, tripolini a nochette, trivellini, trivelli, trombette, tubetti, tubettini, tufoli, turbante, turbantino, vermicelli, vuocche ‘e vecchia, zero, ziti, zituane, zuarini.
wow, we have a pasta afficianado in our midst...... I've been reading the book Heat, about working as a cook, and I've had pasta on the brain for the last couple days....
I have about 20 types in my cupboard but never would've thought there are so many. My wife's Italian, and when I asked her how many, she said, "Ooph, hundreds." Guess she knew, kinda.
