The Blackfly Song

Hi honey, I'm home!

We rolled back into Toronto tonight, from our paddle down Northern Ontario's Sand River. I've just taken some time to read all the stuff posted here in my absence. Thanks so much to Zydecofish and Great White Bear for filling in. I really appreciate your effort to keep misteranchovy alive and cookin while I've been in the woods! I haven't had a chance yet to catch up on all those blogs I normally follow, but I'll do that over the next few days.

Canoe trip details coming soon in a series of posts.

Also, I want to thank t_man sam for a book recommendation. Some time ago, t_man recommended I read Keith Maillard's The Clarinet Polka. It has been on my pile of books to read soon for a while - I started it a number of times, but life got in the way, so I brought it along to the Sand. What a fabulous novel! Some of the Polish-American traditions talked about in the book remind me so much of festive events in my own childhood. The story is a rollercoaster, taking the reader from WWII Poland to Vietnam to an all-girl Polka band to the steeltowns of West Virginia to the narrator's alcoholism and troubled (but spicy) love-life. It also taught me a lot about the Polish-American polka tradition. Great book t_man. Thanks for the tip!
