1st portage
The first trick, once you and your gear leave the train at Sand Lake, is to find the river. Sounds funny I know, but there is a long false bay that stops short of the outlet, but looks like it should be the outlet. We fortunately studied the map and found the channel. There is an hour or so of paddling when you don't know if you are in lake or river exactly. Then you get to the first portage, around the pretty little falls in this picture. Here we made some friends with a party from Michigan we were to meet up with a few times along the river. They gave us healthy shots of tequila to get us through the next portage before we would reach our camp for the night.
