Canada geese may spread superbugs

While you're out there looking for signs of the ivory-billed woodpecker, be very careful not to step in any goose poop. It seems it carries some nasty diseases....

Meanwhile back at the ranch, there are peregrine falcons nesting down at the Lakeview generating station. For those not from Toronto, Lakeview is a coal-fired generating station on Lake Ontario in the west end of Toronto. It seems the structure is just what the doctor ordered for the birds. Here is the twist. The Ontario government is shutting down the generating station, because burning coal for electricity is messing up the air quality. There are plans in place to tear the structure down. However, we have laws that protect the birds, and they cannot tear down the building while the birds are nesting. I heard on the radio this morning that when the birds leave, the building will be trashed and a nesting tower built to accommodate the birds next season......

We have several nesting pairs of Perrigrines downtown South Bend. They are beautiful to watch, and really keep the pigeon population down. It has been a good season for birders here. We have Osprey nesting at a local state park for the first time in at least 40 years. Saw an Osprey fishing damn near downtown on the river this week. Also saw a bald eagle last weekend! very exciting!
