Rescue

Early this morning we were enjoying a coffee in the back yard when Tuffy P. noticed that Jacques, our youngest cat, had stranded himself on a branch about 15 feet up a tree. He was pacing back and forth on the branch, meowing. Loosely translated, I think the meowing meant, "crap, I've really done it now".

A better blogger than I would have immediately ran into the house to get a camera. Silly me, I was too concerned about the cat. We tried coaxing him down, but he would not try to run down the tree. Out with ladder number 1. I could just reach Jacques with this ladder but he dug his claws into the branch and would not let go. I wasn't high enough to get any leverage. Our comes ladder number 2. This time I was able to grab Jacques with 1 hand under his chest and pry his claws off the branch with the other. I swung him away from the tree and down, handing him off to a waiting Tuffy P.

Amazingly, I was able to accomplish this without a single cat scratch!

Well done! It reminds me of the first time our cat went outside as a wee kitten and immediately scrambled up onto our neighbour's roof and was walking around on the chimney. The Spousal Unit, in a panic, went to get the ladder, but just as he set it up, the cat hopped nimbly onto a tree and waltzed to the ground like it was nothing. Cats!

Be careful that Jacques doesn't turn this into a game. My Sunny used to do this ... get himself up on top of doors, the water heater, wardrobes, and then mieow pitifully until I finally "rescued" him. He could get down perfectly well by himself but I think he enjoyed being rescued.
