For the record....

Harper appears open to working with Bloc in 2004 CBC interview
...just because we're going to hear a month of Conservative attack ads about the 'separatist coalition'.

I see America doesn't receive much Canadian politics. Mr. Harper went to the Governor General, who is the representative of the Queen and requested that she prorogue, or suspend parliament until he can regroup and come out with a new budget in late January, which presumably will take into consideration the concerns of the opposition. He's trying to take the wind out of the opposition sails and come up with a budget which might be politically difficult for the coalition to bring down the government on. Harper has started to spin the coalition as a "separatist coalition" because the survival of a coalition in power depends on the Bloc Quebecois supporting the coalition on confidence votes (which are around things like budgets). The Bloc would have no seats in a coalition government but Harper will argue that they wield a great deal of power. This is some of the most interesting politics we've seen up here in my memory.
