The Letter

Alex Chilton and the Boxtops, from Memphis....I had this one on my brain today, so I thought I would put it on your brain too.

Mr. Chilton was only 16 when he recorded this one. Good job! I don't know much about his later career, and I don't know if he still performs or not. I read somewhere that he lived in New Orleans and was evacuated when Katrina hit.

I don't know if there is a law that says garage bands HAVE to play this song, but damn it all, if there isn't maybe there should be one.

If I was a betting man, I'd say the boys on this video were pretty polluted, don't you think?

As soon as I saw the opening words of this post in the sidebar of my blog, I rushed right over! When I got heavily into 50s and 60s music in the early 80s, I became a big fan of the Box Tops. They came out with some of the best pop/soul records of the late 60s. Along with their hits, many of their lesser known tunes are quality (People Gonna Talk, Fields of Clover, and You Keep Tightenin' Up On Me for example).

I had their greatest hits on cassette and the very first CD I ever purchased was "Ultimate Box Tops" (I still have it). I also have a Big Star CD (the band he formed after the Box Tops) and a "Best of" compiling his solo work.

The original Box Tops reunited in the late 90s. In addition to touring, they also cut an album. According to their website (www.boxtops.com), they are doing a show in Fort Payne, AL in September. If they ever come to my area, I am there!

Yes, I agree that the Box Tops were lit up when they filmed the performance you posted.

Wow, that was an awesome video!

The singers eyes do seem dilated. I love it though they all look so much like they can't believe they are lipsyncing on tv. Hey, at least the camera operator did a close up on the guitar playing.
