There is an excellent version of this song performed by Townes Van Zandt, on a CD called Roadsongs. I didn't know Joe Ely's material until I heard that recording. We had a chance to see a show at Massey Hall a couple years ago with Joe Ely, Guy Clark, John Hyatt and Lyle Lovett. The four of them sat on stage in a row, with acoustic guitars and exchanged stories and songs. It was quite a show. Joe Ely has written a lot of very good songs and as well he performs some excellent covers, such as Tom Russell's Gallo del Cielo (maybe you know Ian Tyson's polka version of that tune?). Ely's band often includes accordionist Joel Guzman, who is also one of the best ACORDEON NORTEÑO players around.
I have to confess to having a real soft spot for a number of Texas singer-songwriters...Joe Ely, Guy Clark, Townes van Zandt, Tom Russell (who has adopted Texas as home), Steve Earle, and Stacie Earle too.

Poor dude! Having to buy his own song - what a tale!
