No more Hockey Night in Canada Theme

The CBC has failed to reach a deal with whoever owns the rights to the Hockey Night in Canada Theme to continue to use it. The wheel is in spin people. Surely this is some measure of the state of the universe. After all, it is just about the best known melody in Canada, even better known than Four Strong Winds, even better known than the theme from The Friendly Giant, even better known than Takin Care of Business.
Here's Friendly now.

And here's Ian and Sylvia....and check out the narration...I grew up on that voice!

and finally, let's rock out with BTO

It just goes to show how popular this theme song is when it was the leading story on just about every news broadcast yesterday. I understand that CBC wants to pay as little as possible and the lady who wrote the song wants to get what she thinks is fair. However, why doesn't CBC cough up a million bucks or whatever it would cost to buy the rights to the song and then they can use it whenever/whereever and how often they want. Yes it's just a theme song ... but it's been the theme song announcing the beginning of our most popular sport for the past 40 years. It IS HNIC. Without THIS theme song...it's not the same. I've been reading reports where people played it during labour, weddings, etc - THAT's how much we love this song. It's one of those songs that really gets your blood pumping... I hope they manage to come to a deal and not, as many suspect, run a contest to find a new song.
