N Scale model railway layouts

From time-to-time I post photos of model trains, only because I find them strangely fascinating. When I grow up, I'd like to build a modest N scale model, maybe on a 4X6 table. N scale is smaller than the more familiar HO, but still retains a lot of detail on the trains - but at the same time, emphasizes the scenery. Here are some excellent layout photos - great detail.
This site shows the construction of the model over several stages. I like the idea of using a backdrop with a different picture on each side, so the train goes through two different worlds on its loop.
This guy has built a layout around his entire apartment, complete with drawbridge.

If I got into this, given my addiction to Subbuteo collecting, I'd overdose on anorakism...

Have you thought about a garden railway? There's someone I know here in whoville who designed a railway to run the perimeter of his garden.

I've heard about garden railways. It would be most interesting to maintain one during an anchovy-ville winter though.

I've always admired these, but finding a room for these would be difficult - if you did a garden one, you would have to have a way to enclose it for winter......run it through clear tubing?????

If I ever did one, I might have an abstract painting backdrop and have the trains drive through worlds made from different kinds of erector sets...
