bird of prey

I saw a fantastic natural event this afternoon up above the Forks of the Credit, only an hour from Toronto. Out of the corner of my eye, over the stream, I detected movement, and turning my head, saw a large object plummet into the water with a huge splash, about 50 feet from me. It was a bird of prey - I'm not a bird expert, but I have seen birds I know were ospreys crash-diving the same way - but this is the first time I've seen anything like this on the Credit. There was another splash as it flapped its wings in the water and relaunched back into the air and up above the trees. As far as I could see there was no fish in its talons. It all happened in a matter of seconds.
