Yes, "Guess the Location" is back

Last time out, SP was able to identify the Kicking Horse Pass in British Columbia. Here is another Canadian postcard, this one perhaps not quite so old. The mission is to guess the location AND tell us what the heck this charming postcard depicts.

Ooo Ooo! That looks like the radar installation in Cold Lake/Grand Centre. Growing up we used to call them God's Golfballs.

It's pretty hard to fool readers of mister anchovy's, that's all I can say. They are indeed God's Golfballs, but not the ones at Cold Lake / Grand Centre. They are part of the "Pine Tree Line" defense warning system in Northern Ontario. This installation is on the Northern Route, Highway 11, between Kapuskasing and Hearst, near Lowther. It turns out there is even a Pine Tree Linewebsite. Who knew?

What an odd postcard. I thought it was a weather station of some kind. I visited the site and particularly enjoyed the slide show, especially slide 10 of the Norad Concept.

Where did you find such a postcard?

I bought a few postcards at an antique show in Flamboro, Ontario. I'm going to stay on the lookout for more, because they tell some interesting stories.

My home town, that I just returned from tonight, was part of that defense line.

Did a post on it here.
