A Prairie Home Companion

We watched Robert Altman's A Prairie Home Companion this afternoon. I'm not sure what I expected. The radio show was a favourite of my father's, I enjoyed it the few times I heard it. I wanted the film to be really good. I like the idea of an old-style radio variety show surviving and thriving in St. Paul. In the first 10 or 15 minutes, I thought it reall was good. The film is more or less a behind the scenes look at the live show with a bit of a plot drawn around it. Ms. Streep and Ms. Tomlin were pretty good in the backstage sequences, but in the onstage shots the performance was a little strained. I'm going to say that the film was charming, but nothing great.

2 1/2 salties on the 5 salty anchovy scale.

What did you think?

I actually wanted to go see this because one of my absolute favourite actors, Tommy Lee Jones, is in it. I read some reviews that said it was so-so. I'm sure my brother will download it for me eventually. Thanks for your review.

I am sorry to hear you did not love this movie. In fact, I figured this movie was made for you! Oh dear so I wonder if I will see it...?

I figured it was made for me too, but I was wrong. Big fish was made for me. This was made for somebody else altogether.

I'm not a big Prairie Home fan, although I have been enjoying Keillor's syndicated newspaper column.

I've been meaning to check this movie out. I love "A Prarie Home Companion" on the radio, I guess I'll enjoy the movie too. Kind of like when you see video of your favorite bluesmen that you have only heard before. Thanks for the review.
