Lawyers challenge claims 'Da Vinci Code' story stolen
I thought it was such an aweful book, I could care less if it was stolen - a waste of a perfectly good conspiracy.

Imagine my surprise when I saw this heading at my blog, ha ha ha. Actually, the novel is a terrible book as far as writing goes, but it is such a good idea for a story it will make an awesome movie.
Besides, if Holy Blood Holy Grail is non-fiction, isn't it okay to get inspired by "history" or non-fiction for a novel? Although Dan Brown says his novel contains facts. Ah it's a tangled web.
I wish I had thought of using Holy Blood Holy Grail,as a novel, I was actually jealous of Dan Brown, it was such a great premise. A lot of fans don't notice or care if it's not the best literature in the world, they have found reconciliation with a religion that was male based, and now they can see that there is goddess worship behind their traditions. Maybe thats a good thing, I think so.
I think the book was a really bad grocery store mystery novel dressed up with the grail stuff. I really disliked this one a lot....felt ripped off by the time I plowed through it.
I guess I felt ripped off too although thats not quite the feeling. I couldn't see what the big deal was, because those are topics you talk about when you study art history. Leo in drag, his hidden ladies.
What is kind of cool, is that fans of this book are suddenly interested ina bit of art work! And some architecture! And that darn Dan Brown has the most expensive flashy web site I've ever seen. Big money.
People want to believe in conspiracies. When people have talked about the book to me, they talk as though it's fact.
When I say something like "you know it's fiction right?" They say things like, "Oh, I wouldn't be surprised if it was true" and I can see that they really believe it.
The Catholic Church was so concerned that some higher up felt it was necessary to send a scholar on tour to talk about why many of the claims in the book couldn't be true...but then I find that kind of humourous too.
The Catholic church out there busting myths...LOL
But then, just like oprah's book club...if it can get people who normally don't pick up a book to pick one up...it's all good.
Radmila, I agree that Da Vincis Code has seemed to be like Oprahs book club, and the Harry Potter Event. For awhile "experts" were saying how great Harry Potter is because its getting kids to read. Apparently now that time has passed, kids that suddenly adopted reading from Harry Potter still only want to read Harry potter. It hasn't actually got them more iinterested in the lifestyle of being a reader.
For a long time the Bible was the authority for Christians. Da Vinci Code has attracted disaffected Christians who did not feel the Bible represented them. It is a huge book for women because of the trail of the Goddess Worship that is roused in the plot. Many readers feel," ah now the history makes sense. See, women were oppressed by the church". In Da Vinci Code we see that women were always part of ancient religions.
I think if you want to study ancient religions the Catholic Church is a rich source, because it is obvious that there is a Goddess worship tradition left over from ancient religions .
Do I think the Da Vinci Code is fact? No but...I am a pagan, so the Goddess and God worship is natural. I think what is interesting is that a study of the popularity of the novel shows us that religion is so much about the storytelling. For example I think it is wise to include The Last Temptation Of Christ in a comparison of Da Vinci Code with the "truth" of the Bible. In Last Temptation of Christ we see exercised the idea that Jesus had the choice to go on the cross. This plays into the conspiacy theory in HBHG, that Christ was whisked away and someone else was crucified in his place. This occurs in Last Temptation through a "dream sequence". We find that Jesus realizes that if he doesn't appear to die on the cross, the story doesn't have as much impact nor does it create his mythology.
Actually, I believe the reason that The Life of Pi won the Booker Award was because it too shows the difference between storytelling. What story ending or version makes the most impact for the intentions of a novel. And the protagonist asks "which story do you like the best?".
But I will ramble on and these are just ideas I play with. I think that the most intersting aspect of Da Vinci Code is that its popularity allows us to see how trends in a storys version can occur. I think we have witnessed a split in a church.
the story isn't new...that's why it's so funny that somebody says Brown copied them....I can recall in the 80s a painter friend telling me the same story, and it was hardly a new idea then. It has been marketed and marketed and marketed though and people buy what they're sold. My father used to say "Son, people will buy shit on a stick if you package it up right (he had a lot to say!)".
