june callwood
This is June Callwood, a Canadian hero if I ever saw one, accepting her lifetime achievement award at the Pride Gala tonight. Here is a bit of what the program said about Ms. Callwood. "June Callwood is a Canadian journalist, author and social activist. She has been a journalist for over 58 years including a career in television journalism beginning in 1975.....Callwood's career has been marked by a strong concern for social justice, especially issues affecting children, women and people with HIV/AIDS. She is a very visible supporter and ally of the gay and lesbian community. She s also one of Canada's most famous social justice activists, founding or co-founding over 50 Canadian social action organizations......June was made a memer of the Order of Canada in 1978.....In 2004, the City of Toronto announced its plans to name a street in Callwood's honour."
Sorry this shot is grainy; I took it in dim light from across the room. The fellow on the left is doing simultaneous sign language translation. A few of the guests had fun with the translators, prompting sign language translations for words like blowjob and condom.

I think I need to learn sign language.
We don't often hear of these Canadian heroes. Thank you for sharing this!
Zydecofish.....the signers at this event were incredible - fast and expressive. It was really impressive that they ensured that the entire event was signed. I think it would be really interesting to be able to participate in that language.
