I once saw a TV show hosted by Arthur C. Clarke on this topic. They talked about cats that had escaped from zoos and people who simply did not see what they thought they saw. There are also reports of a Queensland Tiger (in Australia), that a few people claim to have seen. It's probably more like the Tasmanian Tiger (which really looks like a striped dog). It was thought to have been eradicted by hunters.
I know far more about this topic than I really should.

I read a story at www.blather.net on big cat sightings in Ireland of all places. it seems people get big cats for pets and they get too big escape and live off the land. yikes.. wheres the deer rifle.. people should just adopt a stray as you already know..
