level crossing

level crossing, originally uploaded by mister anchovy.

This is at the level crossing on Old Weston Rd, near Davenport. I happened to be there when the freight came by, with my handy split-cam.

A split cam! What is that? Is it a common thing to purchase or did you rig it up?

the split-cam is a cheapo little camera marketed by the lomo people....it is made of genuine plastic and features the warning: this is not a precision device....I knew I'd like it right away. Split-cam pictures, like all lomography, look better after being developed at the grocery store.....for more info on lomo, click here

I have a Lomo LC-A. It's cool, but I think I like my Holga better. Are you familiar with them?

Are the Holgas the twin-lens reflex jobs? Please share details and experience. thx

The Lubitel is a pseudo twin lens reflex, made by Lomo. The Holga is a cheap plastic Chinese camera that uses 120 film. It is prone to light leaks and, coupled with the plastic lens, makes it unpredictable and interesting. Here are a couple of links to Holga pics on my blog:

I like the unpredictability of lomos....and the old-school mechanical design....it positions them as the anti-digital, and I think there is lots of room to play there. I'm planning to bring my 'action sampler' and my 'split cam' on our canoe trip down the Sand River in May, for some unusual perspectives on the landscape. I'll consider aquiring a Holga as well.

I should have added that if you get a Holga, you might want to consider removing the 6x45 frame, so that you can shoot 6x6. The result is that you get squares (obviously) - and fewer frames per roll - but there is heavy vignetting that looks really cool. You may need to apply some felt so that the film won't get scratched. There's lots of info on Holga mods on the web. readin gup on tyhe Holga is a good idea anyway, since it is a little odd. This reminds me that I should upload some more Holga pics. to my blog.
