Just read a book about Ornette Coleman

My friend, The Emperor of Ephemera, sent me a book about the life and music of Ornette Coleman a couple weeks ago. The book was not great, but it reminded me about how much I really like Coleman's music. I particularly enjoy listening to his stuff in the studio, when I'm painting. In fact, Body Meta is on the box in my studio now. The distinctive energy of his material seems very much a painterly energy to me. I'm maybe not the only one to perceive that, since many of his albums feature pictures of ab/ex artwork on the covers. Sometimes, when I play Go with my friend Rik, we listen to Coleman too. When his music is on, I feel like I'm stepping into Ornette Coleman-world - like I must experience the world on his terms. I feel the same way with some Sun Ra material too. That is a good way for paintings to be too.
