Backyard Ice Rinks
Did you ever have a rink in the back yard? We had one for three or four years running. It wasn't big, but it was fun...that is until a kid from up the street took a slapshot with one of those orange hockey balls and hit the guy playing goal square in the teeth, knocking out two of them cleanly. That put quite a damper on the fun, and mom said the rink had to go. Now that pro hockey has been reduced to philosphical differences (give me a break), maybe it's time to get out the hose and start up a rink. I could invite my friend Great White Bear over to take shots.

Your friend the Great White Bear has done the splits exactly once since he gave up playing goal for the neighborhood pick up team 35 years ago (growing up on a lake had its advantages). That one time was last year, when I slipped on the ice at work. The resultant hamstring pull left me on crutches for two weeks. So I think my hockey days, lake or backyard, are done for good!
In the meantime, I'll get my hockey fix watching the mighty U of Michigan Wolverines, the Chicago Wolves, the Grand Rapids Griffins, and the Ft. Wayne Komets.
Mike Illych is the most powerful man in North American hockey. He is to hockey as George Steinbrenner is to baseball. Mr. Illych needs to start protecting the value of his franchise. By any means neccessary, including bullying, cajoling and knocking together of heads! The real problem here is egos. The biggest ego of all needs to start asserting himself!
I never had one in the backyard but we had one right across the street and I can remember staying out all evening skating and having a great time. Sadly my kids haven't had the same experience - we have no backyard or park close by.
