Junction Boy (3)
My father raised hell with Freddy Topham - the great Canadian hero, who was later awarded the Victoria Cross. When they were kids, Freddy's dad had an apple tree in the back yard. Each year, it blossomed, bringing hope of a great crop. Each year, something would happen to that crop. Freddy's dad never saw an apple. Freddy and my father wanted to help. "Joe", said Freddy, "I have an idea". They walked down to their stomping grounds, down along the Humber River. There were a few big old apple trees down there, remnants of an ancient orchard. The boys picked a big sack of little green apples. Using fishing line, they carefully tied dowzins of them up to the branches of the tree in Freddy's yard.....and waited until the fun began.
