There is an excellent book available in some local bookstores chronicling the history of the West Toronto Junction, called the Leader and Recorder History of the Junction. I bought my copy at the Book City in Bloore West Village. It is an area that has had its ups and downs over the years. For most of its history, the Junction has been dry - the change in that law a few years back has helped revitalize the community. If you spend any time there, be sure to have pizza at Vesuvios. It rocks.
