Sand River canoe route
Mike and I are planning to canoe the Sand River, in Algoma, next May. Has anyone out there been on this stream? I've fly fished the lower end for brook trout, where it tumbles into Superior. There was a time when I was planning a canoe trip just about each year.... then there was the Steel River, and the blackflies....and that rapid with the rock garden at the bottom....and the hole in the canoe....and, and....
I'd love to hear about your wilderness camping adventures....

I was on a trip like that once. On the way back we stopped in Gogama for a bar-hopping spree (that was two bars). Richie got loaded on 50s and ended up doing a strip-tease on the band-stand. On foggy days, my head still hurts.
My best wilderness canoe trip was in Upper Penisula right after h.s. Had the bright idea to take 2 weeks and try to do the entire length of the Big Two Hearted River. It turns out there are several branches of the upper B2H. We put in on what certainly could not have been the best of the three. The first 4 days we were out of the canoe more than in. Finally got so frustrated I just waded, threw canoe over next tree fall, swam under tree, and repeated process every 15 yards or so. Forth day in, finally hit paddlable water. Night five, watch bear climb tree. Our food supply was suspended between this tree and another. Watched bear calmly chew on branch until it fell, and then amble down and climb up other tree where our food suplly was resting against the trunk about 10' off the ground. he had a great feast of beef jerky, summer sausage and gorp. We lived the rest of the 9 days on brook trout wrapped in wet canvas and steamed over fire. That was 35 years ago, and i still haven't eate trout since.
Incidently, we canoe every weekend from March to November. You ever get over to Michigan or Indiana drop me a note. always looking for folks to paddle with
Geez...fishing, canoeing, gardening. If we lived closer by each other, you and your wife probably would be fast friends with us : )

I love the Upper Peninsula, and I have fly fished the Big Two-Hearted. Nearly got eaten alive. There are some nice streams for the trout hound on the UP. I had a great time on the Driggs last time I was out there. Next time, I want to fish the western half, the Escanaba, the Black, and so on....on the heels of Robert Travers.
