Dionne Simpson takes prize for young painters
Bravo Dionne Simpson, and to RBC Investments for shelling out the 10,000 Canadiano prize money. That said, check out the statement made by RBC:
"Dionne uses the canvas as a metaphor for the underlying fabric of Canadian society, and as a record of her ongoing exploration into her identity as it relates to the Canadian cultural backdrop,"
"The square is a reoccurring element in her work and she uses it as a symbol of order that exists in stark contrast to the reality of daily life for most Canadians."
OK, this fishboy has spent much of his life thinking about painting, but I haven't got a clue just what that was all about. I would have been much happier if they said, "We hired some good experienced judges for this competition and we're really happy with their choice", instead of trying to educate us on the Canadian cultural backdrop.
