TheStar.com - A strip where there is no tease

Peter Goddard wrote about the Modigliani exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario this weekend. In this article, he stated that Impressionism has become the Classic Rock market of the art world, and went on to describe Modigliani as the Leonard Cohen of his time. For those of you who are not from Toronto, or familiar with Mr. Goddard's work, for many years he was the pop music critic for the Star. It appears he still has rock & roll coursing through his veins.

The AGO, like most galleries has bills to pay, and they do it by bringing in easy to market, easy to digest exhibitions. Ho hum. Modigliani???????

The AGO is spending a fortune on an architectural facelift, but it clearly isn't the building that counts - what is important is the art that goes in it (I don't care who the architect is). It is about time the AGO embraced contemporary Canadian art in a meaningful, engaging and ongoing way. It simply isn't happening and that is why the AGO has become less and less relevent.
