Shadow has recovered. He showed up panhandling at our house after losing a nasty fight. Two legs didn't work. He had a puncture wound in his neck. Hopping, he was in no shape to catch mice for dinner. He is healed, neutered, and putting on weight nicely. Over the past week, he has tentatively accepted invitations to venture into the house. By winter, he will have found the duvet in the bedroom, not to mention the various cat-beds scattered around the house.
